Peikwen Cheng
Peikwen Cheng wurde 1975 im Staate New York geboren, sein Vater stammt aus dem Beijinger Tongzhou, seine Mutter aus Chongqing. Ausgebildet zunächst an der Stanford University in Produktdesign, wohnte er vorübergehend in Taipei, Helsinki und San Francisco, studierte später an der Qinghua-Universität in Beijing und lebt und arbeitet seit 2007 als Fotograf und Designer in Beijing und New York.

Strände, Wüsten und karge Einöden scheinen die ästhetische Faszination Chengs auszumachen. Begeistert spricht er aber vor allem von den sich ballenden Energien einzelner oder auch vieler Menschen, die ihren autarken, meist nur im Augenblick ausgedrückten Visionen nachgehen. Alles begann im Jahr 2000, als Peikwen sich mit seiner Kamera zum Festival Burning Man der kalifornischen Experimentalkunst-Community in die Black Rock Desert nach Nevada aufmachte. Dort entsprang seine Idee des Einfangens anderer und Generierens eigener Wunschträume, von privaten Momenten in öffentlichen Räumen in spontaner Kollaboration. Er nennt es „Lost and Found“, das sind im Hintergrund die Weite, im Vordergrund die Verbildlichung der gelebten Illusionen und ihrer Geschichten.

Es gehe in allen seinen Arbeiten um Veränderungen, so Cheng, .das Leben ist in ständiger Entwicklung mit all seinen Vor- und Nachteilen, multiplen Perspektiven. Ich möchte es verstehen, es vergegenwärtigen und die entstehenden Energien fixieren.  Autorin: Stefanie Thiedig
