Internationally renowned photographer William Ropp is famous for his unique style of representing the mysteriousness and complexity of human nature in his pictures. Ropp's nickname „The Shadow Sculptor" is a direct reference to the photographer's greater contribution to the portrait genre: his peculiar aesthetics created through his self-developed "dance of light" technique. Placing his models in the darkness during extended exposures, and getting them involved in a play of "painting" with lights and shadows, Ropp captures with his camera the ambivalent yet human essence of his subjects, initiating a process of self-reflexion that starts on the picture and extends itself to the viewer's sensibility.
In this occasion, in focus gallery is delighted to present William Ropp's most recent pieces: the new color work series, in which the photographer fully explores his technique in colour portraits and nudes. Now using finest tones and shades, Ropp's newest photographs are an invitation to enter and aesthetically explore the labyrinth of human existence. Beside this new color photographs there are some of his latest black & white images from Africa included in the show.
William Ropp (1960) was born in Versailles and currently lives and works in Nice, France. Since 1988, his photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world and his work has been published in several books, such as ‘Children' and ‘Dreamt Memories from Africa'. A twenty-year retrospective of William Ropp's work was also recently published.
