Thomas Hoepker

In America - 1963 - 2013

With the exhibition of work by the internationally acclaimed photographer Thomas Hoepker the in focus gallery - Burkhard Arnold - continues its successful series of presenting famous Magnum photographer like Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt, Stuart Franklin, Marc Riboud and Susan Meiselas.
The gallery shows works of the black and white photo series "Heartland - An American Road Trip in 1963" and the series "Champ" from 1966 on Muhammad Ali as well as color photographs of New York.
The exhibition will be opened by 7 pm on Saturday 09/06/2014.

Thomas Hoepker, born in 1936 in Munich, lives in New York City since 1976.
As a student of art history and archeology Hoepker won first prizes at the competition "Jugend photographed " at Photokina . So the track was laid down, and he began after studying in Munich regularly to work for magazines. From 1964 Hoepker worked inter alia for the "STERN" as a photojournalist. Since 1989 he is a full member of the legendary Magnum Photos agency. From 2003 to 2007, he was its president. Hoepker's pictures, engaged and committed to the truth, but never voyeuristic or hurtful, represent unvarnished documentary photography.
In the first part of the exhibition, the gallery shows a selection of stunning photographs of the boxer Muhammad Ali. Hoepker accompanied Ali in 1966 a few days for a story in STERN magazine. The book "Champ" was released in 2011.
1963 drove the 27 -year-old Thomas Hoepker and journalist Rolf Winter on behalf of a Hamburger magazines more than 25,000 kilometers across America. They looked behind the gaudy facades of the skyscrapers of Manhattan and documented away from America Postcards - truths , the "American way of life" no longer could look quite as shiny legendary. The images were published in the book "Heartland" 2013. Selected works on this can be seen in the gallery.
The New York photographs in the third part of the exhibition range from the early 1960s
Years on September 11, 2001 , to the current aftermath of the hurricane "Sandy". They document with a vigilant eye for crucial details the "real " New York and published in an opulent picture book "New York" in 2013.

Thomas Hoepker performs his show and signes the books „Champ“ (36 €), „Heartland“ (28 €), „New York“(35 €) and his in September new published book "Wanderlust" . Signed copies can be ordered in advance.

Thomas Hoepker will be honoured with the LEICA Hall of Fame Award 2015. Among the previous awardees are René Burri, Nick Út, Barbara Klemm, Steve McCurry,...
